Artist's Comments

Well, wow, I did not expect a feature for this piece, let alone a DD. First up, thankyou to both Brandon and Aeires

I feel obliged to open up a little more into the intention and ideal behind Harlequin. I was told recently that this genre was a "fad" and it had become so a long time before now, a comment that I believe demands some attention. Afterall, it is perfectly true. One thing I have come to learn over the past year, is that spaceart is not about necessity in detail. In other words, for me, it isn't about having the perfectly intricate nebulae work or exact placement of stars. As with all art I do believe in, well something I often comment about: dynamic.

Energy, life, pulse, excitement. Call it what you will, it is that fundamental part of many genres of art, that extra degree that will grant a piece sucess more often than not. For spaceart in particular it is light that revolves around dynamic. As one certain spaceartist has said, "Light flows. Like water it can gush, bubble, meander and swirl...(it) is the end-all element in a piece." (Quoted from Capturing Heaven by Greg Martin )

That brings me to Harlequin, which, contrary to the new size of this description, was a small venture into light. I personally believe I have made my job simpler because I had made the piece relatively 2-dimensional; vertical. My intention, ideal, was to create a harmony between conceptual lighting and conceptual shape. And a lil bit of green, obviously. ;)

So that leaves it, I regress to my original statement:

Speedpaint on light. Project work.

Edit: has reminded me, the planet was originally created for my piece Artifacts, and does indeed use stocks from resurgere (If my memory serves it is one of the absract volumes.)

Can an image be cold and haunting while remaining calm and peaceful? When I look at Harlequin by *SamODJ, I'm convinced it can. I'm really liking the direction his work is taking, it's a breath of fresh air as new concepts are pursued. Could this be the new revolution in this genre? If so, I'm excited to see where it takes us. (Suggested by ~absolutehalo and Featured by `Aeires)

Shouldn't that planet farther away have more light shining upon the surface that is visible to us than the nearer planet? I think so, but I'm not 100% sure...

Everything else is mint. Great work on this speed paint! :)

you hit the nail on the head. perfect lighting structure. regardless of opinion on the background moon lighting, this is A+ work when it comes to lighting. The composition and angle of view make this a fav of mine easy.

Great work.

Cheers Brandon, tis good to hear from you.

P.s. was thinking of Incandescence when I was doing it.
