Wow, where is the spontaneous combustion emote. /wrist ftw.
This has been a hard piece to make, ironic because I see it as pretty mediocre. I started without a solid concept and severely paid the price. It seems a shame because I was looking forward to this contest, but inspiration blocks have left me at the back of the pack.
- EDIT - Having left this picture as my desktop for a couple of days it has completely changed for me. Having completely grown out of distain, I now enjoy the piece, recognising the subtle details I was ignorant of before hand. Although it sounds arrogant, I do believe the piece has strong merit to it if you are able to look past the immediate impact and focus on the depth found around the planets and shadow.
Well, I felt the need to update my view on the piece. Happy new years all.
See, for me, there is a distinct peace, a quiet about this piece...but also a loneliness, a stillness. There's no stars, no other planet, so that whirling marble is an 'exosolar' planet, i.e. a rogue planet, wandering the cosmos on it's lonesome. That would mean it's either frozen (no star to heat it), or some clever little engineers discovered a way to make it livable. (Though this may be my overly technical viewpoint, being both a nerd and a writer. )
So, I suppose from my viewpoint, it's almost like looking at a marble or drop of water floating through space. It is still, calm, peaceful. Whether or not that is a good thing, I suppose, is up to the beholder. It could be a blank, lifeless world, or it could be a paradise.
I combine viewing this picture with this music here ([link]), as it gives it the lilting melody I think the planet deserves. :3
You do minimalism rather well. You also pain sharp space dust/nebula. Even the non-spherical shape of the planet is nice (light is offsetting its' shape).
I also like how you used blue, but its not monochromatic.
I like that you pick up on the lighting of the planet. I got a number of comments from people who were unsatisfied with its harsh lighting, where light met shadow. I happened to think it worked quite well, and was appropriate to the lightsource. Anyway, thanks for leaving your thoughts.
