EVE Online - Daedalus by SamODJ EVE Online - Daedalus by SamODJ

Finally, my entry to the EVE Online competition is submitted (at last minute as always!).

My starship, named Daedalus, was based off of the Merlin class frigate (for those of you that are familiar with EVE) and was an attempt follow the design sensibilities already found throughout the Caldari Navy. On top of this I attempted to give it an iconic design, something that would fit its title as a navy flagship.

I'll include the written description from the piece here (due to its small font on the actual work):

Originally conceived as a flagship vessel, the Daedalus was intended to lead auxiliary attack groups against the numerous Gurista incursions along the Eastern Rim; its imposing and recognisable visage intended to intimidate the comparatively smaller pirate navy. After a large number of successful engagements, the Daedalus-class battlecruiser, having proved its worth, was transferred to the much larger primary fleets, filling a fast-attack turret based offense role.

By YC106 however, the Daedalus had fallen out of use, in part due to the surge in production of the Ferox and Drake class battlecruisers. Their upgraded missile systems and tank-based role in battle, by this point, were favoured over the offensively capable but defensively weak Daedalus. In time it was almost completely absent from the Caldari Navy, with the few remaining vessels left fulfilling political roles as private, diplomatic transports.

After the Gurista involvement with the Innovaatio Varustukset Corporation in YC109 and the resulting kidnapping of one of the coporation scientists, it was recognised that Nugoeihuvi's Internal Security division were deploying a number of Daedalus-class vessels in their search for the missing scientist and his pirate captors.

Recognised by the Caldari Navy for its high-risk, high reward combat effectiveness, this security operation signalled the return of the Daedalus to active fleet status.

--

The ship was designed in Google Sketchup, given a simple lighting render and then textured in Photoshop. All space work and graphics were also designed in Photoshop.

Credit to Video Co-Pilot for use of one of their optical flares. The icons in the work are property of CCP.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy my entry and good luck to all who entered.

Cool design. If you are looking to get into the modding aspect for games HomeWorld:Complex is always in need of modelers.

Very nice! I like that vertical profile - quite sleek yet still has that Chunky feeling most Caldari ships have.
Also some nice lore behind it - I'm a sucker for fluff. :P

It's a shame the judges didn't agree ;)

It would be so nice if they had planets with vertically oriented rings like that in the actual game. I just started playing a few weeks ago and everything seems so up and down. It doesn't give as good a sense of being in zero-G as it should.

Yeah it would be a nice change, add in some additional variations for the planets. Although with that said they did a great job of re-designing the nebulae present in the game, to the point where it would change size and orientation depending on which system you were in.

Hmm, I think the rings should have the same lighting on the bottom half as on the top (obviously not on the part that is shadowed). I know this probably wasn't the aim of this, but I like to moan :XD:

too bad, still doesn't change my feelings about it. just saw a few other entries and competition was tuff. i never walked away as winner of a contest up to now either (or didn't you win a spaceart one once, if i recall correctly?). i guess one has to have goals in life...

Yeah, me neither...

frankly i didn´t get the criteria, i mean i´m not so into the game perhaps or we miss something, in my case i guess in my case i shouldn´t make the the views 3d. In your case i think your ship was one of the best, and the presentation is game-box-art worthy.

So who knows.

But well, i guess it was fun to make and show. And we learn a lot about spaceship concepts.

excelent job anyway.

Criteria definitely appears foggy now, what with the finalists announced...I've played a fair bit of EVE as well so alot of the finalists chosen don't appear very EVE-like.

Still, what's done is done, and it was definitely a fun experience designing and presenting a ship I feel relevant to the EVE Online universe. I've enjoyed the ride, i'm glad you have also. ;)

I went from seeing no entries to this to practically every space and sci-fi artists I watch start submitting them in the past couple of days  Like the others this is once again a nice and unique design and you provide heavy competition for the rest just as they do to you...it'll be interesting to see how this turns out :eager:

The red space sample image is kickass too 8-)

That's always the way with contests...Unless a high-level artist has a lot of time on their hands you rarely see anything that's winning material appear in the first week or two. I remember entering a contest near the end of it and so far I was looking like the winner, someone better saw mine and decided to enter too and they beat me right near the end...My entry came second only to theirs :dohtwo: So that's another reason why good artists might enter late too - deliberately so they don't promote the contests too much to potential competition, that's what I do now :paranoid: But I assure you I'm not entering this one. Space is my thing, spaceships are not =p

Wonderful work and presentation! I do wish the original image was a bit larger though. 2000×1000 seems too small to make out the fine detail that I know is there, and I want to see it clearly damnit! :p

Alternatively, your perspective and orthographic views could both take up more page real estate, but with the contest drawing to a close I would leave it alone. These are tiny nitpicks that stem from a desire to see more of a design I like, rather than from any displeasure. Of course, if you win 1st I'll be able to see it in game, so good luck!
